About Steve Freides

I am a musician and a music teacher. I am a strength teacher (barbell, kettlebell, bodyweight). I am an Advanced Buteyko breathing teacher. I hold a doctoral degree in music. I give private lessons in piano, guitar, upright bass, electric bass, French Horn, and music theory/ear-training. After growing up a jazz guitar player, I became a classical guitar major in college, switched to voice for my Bachelor's degree, and went on to earn Masters and Doctoral degree in Choral conducting. After earning my Masters, where I won the award for Excellence in Techniques of Music, I spent 10 years on the faculty at the Mannes College of Music, now a division of the New School, in NYC. I later taught at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ. I am an athlete and a Senior Instructor in the StrongFirst School of Strength. I suffered a severe back injury and took up weight lifting as part of my recovery. Strength in general is a subject about which I am passionate. I have won gold medals and set world records in my age group as a "raw"​ (no supportive equipment) powerlifter in the 148 and 145 lb. weight classes. Please see http://StrongFirst.com for more. I achieved a suspended side split at age 53 and teach the Flexible Steel Instructor certification workshop, see I am a Master Instructor in the Advanced Methods of Professor Buteyko. I was a sickly child. Fortunately with the onset of puberty many of my asthma symptoms began to fade, but unfortunately they began to return in my early 40's. I have been a student of alternative (non-drug) methods of improving asthma, and Buteyko Breathing has helped much more than my asthma - in addition to eliminating any need for asthma and allergy medicines, it has also helped me be both calmer and more focused in everything I do.
