The crux of the matter is - I really hate wasting time. The most valuable resource any of us will ever have is time. It might sound brutal to say: you can always make more money, take another trip, find another romantic partner, but you can never claw back time. Once time is gone, it ain’t coming back. And where do we spend the bulk of our time? For many of us, it is work. One estimate exists that we will spend hours at work over the course of our lives. From my experience, and probably from yours too, a significant portion of that time is wasted. Think about how much empty time people experience in their work lives. Meetings with no purpose, conversations with no decisions, projects with no goals, careers in stasis. At some point in my career, I had enough of the wasted time, and fell into the role of irresistible force pushing against an immovable object. Of course, it’s a certainty that I was not such an irresistible force when starting down this road. Time and life have taught me many lessons here, about people, leadership, business, psychology, and myself. I ask much better questions now. Lee Thayer has said “Be the source of change, or the victim of it.” I’ve embraced that philosophy and realized that my particular purpose on this earth is to bring sanity, clarity, and focus to complex development projects. Call it predestiny, or predisposition, or simply presumption. Maybe some would call it hubris, but that knowledge is a certainty within me, and does pave the ground in front of me. Projects back on track, and done right: on time, on budget, under control. Sounds like common sense, doesn’t it? But common sense seems to be quite uncommon in the real world.
