About Steve McCarthy

Steve McCarthy is a television and film producer/director with more than three decades of experience. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, McCarthy joined CBS News after graduating from SUNY Oswego. During the next twenty years he rose to an Emmy Award winning producer on "Dateline" and "60 Minutes" before forming McCarthy Productions, Inc. in 2001. McCarthy's work has taken him around the world, interviewing subjects ranging from Mommar Qaddafi to Mick Jagger. He has produced for Mike Wallace, Tom Brokaw, Ed Bradley, Dan Rather, Charlie Rose and others. McCarthy Productions, Inc. is a family business with sons Ryan and Justin and daughter Alison helping to produce, shoot and edit for clients including MSNBC, Havas Edge, NBC News, CBS News, A&E Digital, The Charlie Rose Show, Dan Rather Reports and others. In 2011 McCarthy joined the staff at Montclair State University where he currently teaches Journalism and Film Production. He has taken students to Tunisia, Jordan, Israel, Sweden, Austria, Italy and Malawi on global reporting trips. In 2019 he helped lead a student reporting trip to Puerto Rico to cover Hurricane Maria. The Special edition of Montclair NewsLab won a student Emmy for "Best in News" and the prestigious Bricker Humanitarian Award, which recognizes work that highlights global human issues. McCarthy's latest major project,"Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists" premiered on HBO in 2019. McCarthy co-produced and co-directed with Jonathan Alter and John Block. McCarthy is Director of Photography.(Winner 2019 Emmy) In 2023, McCarthy is getting ready to release "Eva's Promise," a documentary featuring Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss, posthumous stepsister of Anne Frank. The film tells the story of Eva promising to find her brother's hidden artwork and poetry, and share it with the world if he didn't survive the camps. McCarthy is Director and Co-Producer of the documentary.
