Background
About Steve Melcher
I’m a two-time Emmy-winning TV writer and producer who over my career has mostly specialized in big shiny-floor game shows and late-night comedy. And sometimes I wind up on stuff like “Impractical Jokers” that’s a little of both. But I’ve also done lots of reality, comedy docs, kids’ shows, clip shows, talk shows, award shows, and of course a podcast. And I’m pretty much game for anything, so try me. Some highlights: GAME SHOWS: “THE FLOOR”: I’m currently the acting Supervising Producer for Fox’s “The Floor.” In that capacity, I headed a team of 20 producers, clearance people, and graphics artists in creating over pieces of content for our 81 contestants under an extremely tight deadline, having to negotiate an 8-hour time difference after we got to Ireland, where we shot the thing. “MILLIONAIRE”: I was a writer for the initial insane 2-week summer run in then later returned for a 5-year stint as Head Writer. Under my leadership, we won a WGA Award. “HARRY POTTER: HOGWARTS TOURNAMENT OF HOUSES” COMEDY: “THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN” “THE JESELNIK OFFENSIVE, ”“NOT SAFE WITH NIKKI GLASER,” and “THE SHOWBIZ SHOW WITH DAVID SPADE” (my Comedy Central trilogy) “IMPRACTICAL JOKERS”: I was Supervising Producer for the show’s first two seasons. “PENN & TELLER’S BULLSHIT!”: I wrote/produced 8 shows, including the controversial “Vaccinations” and “Violent Video Games” episodes. “THE MARTIN SHORT SHOW”: I contributed to Marty’s monologue and gave him possible ad-libs for each of his celebrity interviews. And yes, I’m allowed to call him Marty (I think). DEVELOPMENT: I had a two-year development deal with Telepictures, during which I helped develop and produce the day-and-date comedy/news website “Hardly News” and the comedy web series “Date Court” – which featured the then-unknown Octavia Spencer. In addition, my wife and I have our own production company through which we’ve developed and sold a number of unscripted projects, including game shows to CBS, CBS syndication, GSN, and VH1. Along the way, we’ve partnered with such companies as Mark Burnett, ITV, Mission Control Media, Lionsgate, UTAS, BuzzFeed, Hungry Bear, and Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions."CARTOONIST": And finally, I’m the author of “That Is Priceless: Art’s Greatest Masterpieces Made Slightly Funnier” (Andrews McMeel), a book based on my popular humor blog of the same name, where I give old paintings new titles. Yes, I said a blog, but in my defense I started it in 2009. “That is Priceless” is syndicated as a daily comic strip on GoComics.com.
