The insurance industry could improve its image in the public sector by doing more to promote all the good things we do to improve our communities. It's easy for the average consumer to think negatively about insurance because they are paying for something that's intangible. There's no immediate gratification and the policyholder receives nothing consumable when paying the premium. We in the industry must continually promote the peace of mind that is created in society by the insurance mechanism. When a covered cause of loss occurs and the insurance company is there to honor its commitment to make the insured whole, there is great economic benefit to society. When a tragic loss happens to a policyholder there is no better feeling than knowing you work in an industry that's going to help that business get back on its feet so that they can continue to serve their customers and meet their mission as an organization. We improve lives! As the insurance workforce ages, this is a huge selling point to encourage more youth to join our industry. People want to work in an industry that provides stability, allows for personal and professional growth, and creates the opportunity to feel like what you do makes a difference in the lives of others. The insurance industry provides all of this, and more, and that's why I'm passionate about reminding everyone, including those looking to start a new career, about all the good things that come from insurance. What we do matters! I've played on many sports teams and there are so many similarities between being on a sports team and a work team. In sports, there are many ways to win but there are 3 areas that dramatically improve your odds of winning - effective leadership, good strategy and execution, and player development. The best teams have:> Coaches that have a vision and, more importantly, can communicate that vision to players in a way that makes them see, understand, and want to participate in the end goal.> An understanding of what the competition does and a strategy/plan on how to win.> Individual development plans for each player to improve their skills.> Consistency in execution that allows for maximum efficiency and teamwork. This applies both on the sports field and in the marketplace. Why hope for the hail mary pass or the lucky half court shot when proper preparation and planning can help you win the game!
