About Steve Serck

After graduating from law school I joined the Ahlers & Cooney law firm in Des Moines, Iowa as an associate and later a shareholder. During my 18 years in private practice I advised private higher educational institutions, while also representing them in litigation. In 2008, desiring a full-time in-house position, I joined the legal team at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, first as Associate Counsel, and then as University Counsel. In 2013 I joined the legal team at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. In 2019 I was appointed University Counsel at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs North Carolina. My current concentrations include daily advising on every aspect of Higher Education Law, including employment law, contracts, internal policy drafting, Title IX, ADA, Title VII, EEOC, OCR, Clery Act, internal grievances and appeals, FERPA, student discipline, litigation management, bequests, regulatory compliance, employee training, insurance, and general risk management. I received my BA in Political Science and twin minors in Business and Economics from the University of Northern Iowa with high distinction. I received my JD from the University of Iowa College of Law with high distinction.
