FROM MENTOR TO APPRENTICE Looking for detailed travel guides to off-the-beaten-path destinations? I’m glad you’re here. I’m Steve, a travel agent based in Singapore. I studied Tourism Studies at SHATEC and have been working my way up from a Travel Advisor to managing travel businesses of my own as well as for others. I travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations that most people don't. I specialize in experiential travel — trekking, expedition cruises, wildlife photography, Middle East, Latin America, African Safaris. I am so enthused to be a part of this industry that I quit computer studies for a travel career that has taken me all over the world while helping several mentees in finding the right direction to progress in their careers. Never have I ever imagine that one day I would become an apprentice in a different industry. As an eyewitness of numerous world events that have impacted the travel industry, I thought I had seen it all until the coronavirus outbreak erupted. Due to the Covid-19 situation and restrictions placed on global travel, outbound travel will not be happening any time soon. The knock-on effects for the whole industry are far-reaching. I'm fortunate that many of my clients have agreed to postpone their trips, which means that I'm guaranteed future work. But the immediate impact of the situation is considerable. So, what’s for the immediate future? By taking a year off from full-time work to toggling between advocating experiential tours and reskilling myself in the way of learning a new trade - video editing at Singapore Media Academy, I hope to embark on the journey of honing creative video production techniques with effective marketing and advertising-oriented content in order to increase credibility as a Travel Advisor. I have tons of photographs stockpiled from my trips, and an overload of stories I’ve almost forgotten about. From backpacking in India, to photographing the northern lights in Iceland, to trekking in the Himalayas, to road-tripping across Sudan. As I write, memories flow back to me, and I feel inspired to keep seeing and doing more while hoping to inspire others to venture off the beaten path too. Where will you go next?
