About Steven Benson

Steven Benson's photographic work is exhibited internationally including a solo exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Numerous permanent collections include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Museum of Fine Art-Houston, Portland Art Museum, Museet for Fotokunst- Denmark, Bibliotheque Nationale-France and Centre Georges Pompidou. Feature articles about his work have appeared in European Photography (Germany), Katalog (Denmark) Creative Camera (U.K.), CameraArts, American Photo, Urbanautica.com and PhotoMondo.dk His photo essay, “The Cost of Power in China: The Three Gorges Dam and the Yangtze River Valley”, was a featured exhibition at the FotoFest Biennial in Houston (2004), the Daegu Photo Biennal in South Korea and the Odense Foto Triennale in Denmark during (2006). A book of this work was published in 2006 by Black Opal Press with essays by A.D. Coleman and Dai Qing. Benson’s work was the subject of a thirty-year retrospective in Paris at the Centre des Bords de Marne,(2004) and a retrospective at Flatfile Galleries in Chicago (2007). Benson’s series, “A Cultural Critique”, was a featured exhibition at the ‘First Argentinean Biennial of Documentary Photography’, 2004, the ‘4th International Festival of Photography’ in Lodz, Poland, the ‘7th Internationale Fototage Biennial’ in Mannheim, Germany during (2005), the ‘9th International Photography Gathering’ in Syria, the ‘Lianzhou International Festival of Photography’ in China 2006 and the FotoFest 2008 Biennial. A forty-year retrospective,"Steven Benson: Space and Time-40 Years in Photographs", was on view at the Southeast Museum of Photography in 2012.("Thank you SE Museum for an experience I will remember the rest of my life.") His current work,"Highway Deconstruction", is now in its seventh year of exploring the potential for photographic inquiry. The goal is to transform this infrastructure project into aesthetically seductive images; something never intended by the builders. This series has been featured as a cover story and 16 page portfolio in Orlando Magazine and exhibited at 221B Gallery (Colorado), 621 Gallery (Florida), SE Museum of Photography (Florida), the McGlothlin Center for the Arts at Emery and Henry College (Virginia) and the FENCE 2021, among others.
