I am a microbiologist broadly interested in the biology of organisms living within complex communities. My research seeks to to decipher the mechanisms through which cells, and their underlying genes and genomes, interact with each other and their environment to shape community functions. I combine laboratory experiments, computational analysis of large-scale "omic" datasets, and field studies to better understand microbiomes at a systems level, with a current focus on ocean communities. Broad areas of expertise in microbiology, extracellular vesicle (exosome) biology, and genomics/bioinformatics.
