About Steven Cardinal

Information security is more than a collection of technologies designed to protect a business from attack. It is a combination of people, processes, and technology working together to support the organization in achieving its mission while dealing with cyberattacks and the results of human error. As an information security and technology professional for over 25 years, I am committed to developing a culture of security with the associated maturity of business processes that leverage innovative, effective, and cost-efficient technology. People matter and there isn’t enough budget or technology to get around that fact. My career has included healthcare, finance, and government, with experience in organizations small and large, startups to well-established enterprises. In every instance, I saw my role as partnering with the business to understand its mission and the cyber risks that threatened that mission. Frameworks are not enough. Every organization is different. I have developed risk management programs to address such concerns as compliance, business continuity, growth, and reputation. With my deep technical background, I have earned the respect of the technologists tasked with change, drawing them into solving problems rather than resisting change. My willingness to listen has earned me the trust of my customers such that they know I am interested in solving the problems they face. Respect and trust are at the core of my approach. My career path has demonstrated my curiosity and passion for security and technology, having worked in both leadership and hands-on positions, and experiencing different industries and roles to develop a holistic view of the challenges organizations face. I believe there is much to learn to how others approach challenges and that these lessons can bring innovative solutions to me and my organization. I also believe in being a life-long learner, having earned my BS in Information Technology well into my career, received certifications including the CISSP, GSTRT, GCIH, and GSTRT, and am close to completing my MS in Leadership from the Citadel Graduate College. Change occurs rapidly and the need for learning is constant. I try to inspire my teams, encouraging their growth, and nurturing their career development.
