About Steven E.

I really love science: I always have. Learning what makes our universe, our planet, our bodies, and the world around us work is my favorite thing to do. This is what was great about being a Registered Nurse. With every patient that I took care of, I learned something new about physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, treatments, and so on. In nursing, I was able to put science to work through the use of evidence-based practices. As meaningful as my nursing career has been, I have broadened my formal scientific knowledge with a degree in Environmental Science, focusing in Environmental Biology. Combined with my desire to help people and preserve the planet, being an Environmental Biologist gives me the opportunity to put science to work and be at the forefront of scientific learning. I am excited about being a part of rebuilding and strengthening the human relationship with the environment. A critical contributor to my success as a scientist is leveraging skills that I gained in the Army and as a Registered Nurse. Combat Life Saver training and direct work with team medics during my time as an Airborne Infantryman was my first introduction to medicine. Following my military career, I earned my RN license. Throughout nursing school, in addition to a variety of clinical experiences, I volunteered at a clinic where I had the opportunity to provide care to patients without health insurance. As a nurse, I worked in corporate wellness, the emergency department, and in progressive and intensive care units, all of which were unique experiences that presented a variety of medical and social patient needs, providing significant learning experiences that serve me well as a scientist.
