About Steven Gamache

I have twelve years of experience teaching in underserved communities in both public and charter settings. That experience spans New Orleans, Boston, and, most recently, upstate New York. Two of the schools I worked in while in New Orleans were high-stakes turnaround environments. In both schools, we increased each school's state report card grade from an F to a C in just two years. In the second turnaround school, I had the opportunity of being on the leadership team, where I worked with directors and my principal to set goals and priorities, analyze school-wide data, and conduct observations and walkthroughs to improve school culture and instructional quality. In addition to teaching, my role of curriculum manager also included mentoring and coaching social studies and English teachers in the middle school in classroom management and instructional strategies. I would observe them weekly and plan individualized coaching meetings to work on concrete action steps to improve their practices. Based on staff trends and data, I would lead professional development sessions for staff and provide immediate practice and feedback on the content or skill. Because of my work in this second turnaround school, I was awarded with the Milken Educator Award, a national teaching award, in 2019. In August 2022, I switched careers into a role in government as Communications Director for the Legislative Commission on Rural Resources in the New York State Senate.
