Background

About Steven Garcia

I have proudly served the greater Riverside community for 31-years as an English teacher on the Riverside City College campus. I am also one of two Puente Project teachers on campus and have been teaching with the Puente Project since 1994. I bring the same passion to my classes and teaching profession as when I first started on the Riverside City College campus back in Sept. I must say, I just received my 30-Year Service Pin, but still feel I am ‘making a difference’ each day I enter the classroom with my ‘writers.’ One of my greatest interests besides teaching is directing and guiding more young Latinos to consider law school and the legal profession as the most effective tool to affect the fundamental social issues currently facing this country's Latinas/os. We also need to recruit more national leaders who can bring solidarity to our growing Latino voting base. Some day I hope to see a Latinx U.S. President - that remains one of my dreams. In the meantime, I remain stoked everyday I am in the classroom on my beautiful campus, before my sharp, super smart new young Gen- recall, I taught for 31-years already, seen a lot! Finally, I have so much RESPECT for this new Gen. I am fortunate and blessed to be allowed to be their writing teacher each and every day. I am currently a ABD because of extenuating circumstance beyond my control. I honestly believe that the recruitment of more young Latina/os to the legal profession can help improve our status and tighten our political solidarity in this country. Increasing the number of Latina/o lawyers now will help create a pool of civic leadership opportunities for the future. After all, is it not our turn to lead this great country by having the first Latina/o U.S. President? Forty-two of the previous presidents were lawyers as is President Obama. I hope to see a Latina/o president in the next decade or two and my bet is that he or she will be a lawyer by training. Cheers- I have a number former students who became lawyers across the U.S. and remain hopeful. I really would like to see more Latinas pursue law degrees - just sayin’ Cheers, Steve
