My clinical research is directed to improving the treatment of brain tumours, spinal disorders and movement disorders. These conditions are a major cause of disability and loss of employment. The nature of my research contribution in these areas is as follows: Brain Tumours- First to demonstrate that MR Spectroscopy can grade gliomas in vivo- Inventor of a relocatable stereotactic frame for fractioned radiotherapy, used in over centres worldwide (GTC Frame, Radionics Inc) Spinal Surgery - Developed and published on 5 new spinal operations- Invented cervical disc prosthesis. First FDA approved cervical arthroplasty (Prestige cervical disc. Sofamor Danek/Medtronic Inc.) Meta-analysis demonstrates superior outcomes to conventional fusion techniques. Functional Neurosurgery - Developed new techniques for targeting brain nuclei under GA, which is safer and more accurate than conventional awake surgery (J Neurosurgery 2007)- Pioneered lesioning of the subthalamic nucleus to treat Parkinson’s Disease- Pioneered Pallidotomy to treat tardive dyskinesia and hyperkinetic cerebral palsy- Pioneered stimulation of the caudal Zona Incerta to treat Parkinson’s disease and Essential tremor- Pioneered stimulation of the Pedunculopontine nucleus to treat axial symptoms in advanced Parkinson’s disease- Pioneered stimulation of the mamillothalamic tract for the treatment of epilepsy- Pioneered stimulation of the Globus Pallidus Interna to treat fixed dystonia. Drug Delivery to the Brain - Pioneered intraputamenal infusion of GDNF to reverse Parkinson’s disease by inducing neural regeneration (Nature Med 2003 Top 100 most highly sighted papers in Neurology], Nature Med 2005, Annals of Neurology 2005, 2006)- Inventor of intraparenchymal drug delivery systems - Developed small and large animal models to evaluate and optimize Convection Enhanced Delivery of chemotherapy, neurotrophins, enzymes, nanoparticles and viral vectors to the brain.(Human Gene Therapy, 2011; J.
