Background
About Steven Harley
I joined Staffordshire police in 2004 following 9 years in electronics manufacturing. I started my policing career the same as most student officers on a response policing team. Following the completion of my 2 year probation I qualified in public order and then counter terrorist search. I added video interviewing vulnerable people, drink driving procedures, advanced driver training, search team leader and public order serial supervisor to my skill set. In 2008 I qualified as a Sergeant and moved into neighbourhood policing with responsibility for a large university campus and the adjoining village. I enhanced my skills by making and maintaining numerous community links which are needed to manage a neighbourhood beat area. I worked alongside PCSO's for the first time and got to know about their invaluable role within the policing family. In 2010 I commenced a period as an acting Sergeant within a rural response team. During this time I was able to give my team the benefit of my response and neighbourhood policing knowledge helping to forge closer working relationships within the 2 teams. I returned to neighbourhood policing where I remained until 2013 when I moved into offender management within the force integrated offender management team. This area of business is massively different to any other forms of policing I had experienced and learnt huge amounts in relation to the offenders and their reasons for committing volume crime. The satisfaction of being able to help a person break the cycle of offending and chaotic behaviour is something I have yet to better in my professional career. In 2015 I moved back to response policing and in 2017 I was made temporary Sergeant. In 2019 I was successful in the promotion process to the rank of Sergeant.
