I call it out because it is a motivator to me. When people live life by going through the motions and doing just the bare minimum, they don’t see what could be. You can miss a lot in life, and I mean both personal and professional, if you don’t stop for a second to analyze your surroundings, to see what is in front of you and obvious and also look at the bigger picture. The bigger picture for me is making a difference in people’s lives. In my current role, I have the opportunity to increase the efficiency and speed in which veterans receive their benefit payouts. Though my work is pretty far removed from the outcome, I can still feel the impact and know that the work I’m doing is more than just a paycheck. Having a job that gives me this sense of fulfillment will always be important to me. I think there are opportunities every day to positively affect people’s lives. It doesn’t always have to be something big: helping a peer who is behind in work or teaching a skill to a junior employee. I see all of these things as interconnected. That’s why I think such a lofty quote has real meaning for me, every day at work, as a business analyst.
