About Steven Neal

Fomer Council member Steve Neal has long been a progressive community leader in the Los Angeles area. Steve, a Compton native, is a minister, activist and policy-maker. He has served North Long Beach on the Long Beach City Council. Steve has rich history as a community advocate and leader within the Long Beach and greater Los Angeles area. Lauded for his ability to work with diverse groups of people, Neal has led numerous efforts in the non-profit, labor, and government sectors to improve wages, health care, education, and training programs for working families. As a Long Beach City Councilmember, Steve focused on economic and social issues affecting families and neighborhoods. He has an accomplished record of supporting neighborhoods, small businesses, and working families as the author and creator of the Uptown Renaissance, Long Beach Foreclosure Registry Program, the Long Beach Liquor Store Modernization Program, the Long Beach Be Safe initiative & the Uptown Jazz and Blues Fest and the North Long Beach Business Alliance. He also led the creation of “Getting Back to Work: Regional Summit on Good Jobs and Small Business” and the Construction Workforce Outreach Partnership which assists residents in gaining the preparation and skills needed to gain a successful career and a living wage in the construction industry. His desire to serve is deeply grounded in the belief that public service is more than a job, it is a responsibility. He is a former board member of the Los Angeles Emergency Food and Shelter Program, the Fairfield Family YMCA, the Southern California Association of Government, Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Board and the Long Beach Freedom Schools program. He currently serves as a board member to the Los Angeles chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
