About Steven Pope

Mr. Pope has over 40 years of experience in technical areas and management supporting DOE, NRC, Nuclear Steam Supply System vendors, and nuclear utilities. He served as a senior licensing engineer with NuScale Power, LLC in their Rockville, MD. office. He was one of the primary NuScale licensing interface individuals to the NRC Licensing Branch during the pre-application phase of the design certification application (DCA) and the early phases of the NRC review of the DCA. He was a primary interface and coordinator with the advisory committee on reactor safeguards (ACRS) during the Phase 3 and Phase 5 reviews of the DCA. He managed the B&W mPower Rockville office as a licensing supervisor, and conducted pre-application engagements of the mPower DCA with the NRC. He prepared and approved draft design control document (DCD) sections for the mPower DCD. He led multi-disciplinary groups supporting NRC in reviews and safety evaluation (SE) input for the Westinghouse DCA revision 16 and combined license applications (COLAs) referencing the He also led and conducted reviews and preparation of SE input for the Mitsubishi US-APWR DCA and reference COLA (Comanche Peak) for the US-APWR design. He led a Contractor assessment team on operating reactor post 9/11 spent fuel pool mitigation strategy assessments and core and containment mitigation strategy assessments for the NRC Office of the EDO’s Nuclear Security Special Project. He managed contracts to the NRC Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR) in the review of COL physical security plans and security assessments as well as DC application physical security design reviews particularly in the vital equipment and target set analysis areas. He served as a Senior Project Manager of license renewal for Constellation Energy Group, responsible for the full scope of a license renewal project for a power plant, which included the integrated plant assessment, environmental review, strategic issues management, life cycle management, and implementation of aging management programs and commitments. Mr. Pope conducted preoperational and power ascension plant test programs at 3 boiling water reactor initial plant startups. Mr. Pope is a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a Nuclear Submarine officer for five years.
