About Steven Rajam

I'm Creative Director of the leading speech radio and podcast indie in Wales: awarded APA PRODUCTION COMPANY OF THE YEAR and BPA PODCAST OF THE YEAR 2023. We craft narrative audio, documentaries and music content for a variety of nonprofit, commercial and corporate clients - including Audible, Natwest, Novartis and the BBC. I possess more than two decades of broadcasting experience (TV, radio and podcasting)- initially in-house as a BBC producer as part of Network Radio and Music (Cardiff), and since 2018 as co-founder of Overcoat Media. As a creative director, I'm in demand as an industry leader in audio documentary storytelling and podcasting, Exec-Producing hundreds of hours a year and offering guidance, mentoring and training to a wide network of producers. I also regularly speak at and play an active part in leading industry conferences and events such as the International Features Conference, Prix Europa, HearSay Festival, Prix Marulic and others. Dovetailing with my work as a nonfiction storyteller and editorial lead, I'm also a specialist in classical and contemporary music - with a very wide and diverse array of knowledge and expertise from my time as a practising musician and academic. I've produced thousands of hours of specialist music content, from playlist shows to documentaries to live strands to concerts and competitions, including BBC Young Musician, Cardiff Singer of the World and Late Junction. When not Exec Producing I continue to be an active producer, making programmes on subjects from politics to sport, religion to natural history, social media to Santa Claus. My work has been honoured by the Prix Italia, Prix Europa, Prix Marulic and the Audio Production Awards. As one of the very few editorial leads and company owners with BAME heritage, Diversity and Inclusion is very important to me. I'm proud of Overcoat Media's track record and reputation for telling stories that often don't get told: of marginalised and hidden voices, whether it be in the arts, in politics or in our contemporary society. I take an active role in trying to effect change at large organisations such as the BBC - notably, in my specialisms of classical music and documentary making, but elsewhere as well.
