About Steven Zhou

Steven Zhou is an award-winning journalist, writer, and producer based in Toronto. He covered the 2019 Canadian federal election for VICE News. Before that, he was an Associate Producer and Senior Writer at the CBC. He was also a reporter for VICE Canada focusing on discrimination, politics, and national security issues. He is currently a Writer for the National Council of Canadian Muslims. Steven publishes frequently on national security, discrimination, and the far-right. His writings have appeared in the LA Review of Books, Foreign Policy, VICE News, The Nation, Quartz, Buzzfeed, Salon, Al Jazeera English, CBC News, the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, The Walrus, Toronto Life, the Ottawa Citizen, Now Magazine, the Literary Review of Canada, Jacobin, OpenCanada.org, The Edmonton Journal, The National Observer, The Huffington Post, New Canadian Media, Briarpatch Magazine, Policy Options, and the American Conservative, among others. Additionally, Steven has also worked for CBC-Radio's "Day 6" program, a weekly current events show, as well as a city reporter for The Ottawa Citizen. He was also the Managing Editor for The Mark News, an international op-ed syndication service. Steven graduated with a Master of Journalism from Carleton University in 2013. He focused on the radicalization of Muslim youth in Toronto for his MRP. He has extensive experience in human rights advocacy and civic engagement. He worked for Human Rights Watch, OXFAM Canada, and several other NGOs. He has also consulted in media affairs and civic engagement with organizations such as the Council of Canadian Muslim Women (CCMW) and Islamic Relief Canada. Steven is a commentator for national and international media on security issues and Muslim affairs. Steven was also awarded the Excellence in Media Award by MuslimFest 2017 and was named one of the top 100 Cdn Tweeters on foreign affairs by OpenCanada.org in 2016.
