About Stuart Becker

A veterinarian with experience in clinical practice and academia, I developed my interest in data and statistics through my PhD. I enjoy using my skills with SQL and statistical analysis to find new insights from existing clinical data, and so create benefits for patients no matter what their species (even humans!). After 20 years in small animal practice, as employee, locum, and divisional partner, I'm now delighted to be joining the Royal Veterinary College, to lead a study on interventions to optimise antimicrobial stewardship, within the VetCompass research project. During my Health Data Science MSc at the University of Liverpool, I used linear mixed effects, multi-level and multiple-membership random effects models to investigate how external factors influence veterinary surgeons when deciding which antibiotic to use when treating animals in small animal practice, and plan to extend this within VetCompass, to understand how behaviour change strategies can help tackle the challenge of antibiotic resistance in veterinary practices across the UK, and beyond.
