Background
About Stuart Rathbone
Stuart Rathbone studied archaeology at Bournemouth University in southern England, graduating in 2001. Between 2016 and 2021 Stuart undertook a PhD study of early 19th century Coastal Signal Stations with IT Sligo, in Northwest Ireland. He worked as a CRM archaeologist in Ireland between 2001 and 2008, when he began working as the Director of Field Work for the Achill Archaeological Field School, located on Achill Island, Co Mayo, a position he would hold intermittently until 2017. In 2012 he returned to England where he worked as the Senior Project Archaeologist for Archaeological Solutions Ltd, located in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, where he was specifically employed in order to develop new training regimes and ensure the field staff had the required skill levels to successfully complete their assigned tasks. His work for the company included directing the excavation of a series of well preserved Iron Age timber jetties in the estuary of The Wash. In 2013 he moved to the remote Shetland Islands to work on a major gas processing plant which overlay a substantial Neolithic landscape. Whilst in the Northern Isles he took the opportunity to volunteer at the Ness of Brodgar excavations on Orkney which are examining the largest and best-preserved Neolithic settlement known in the British Isles. In October 2014 Stuart emigrated to America, and then spent several years alternating between working in Ireland for Achill Archaeological Field School and working for various CRM firms in Nevada. In November 2017 he took a full-time position at Broadbent and Associates Environmental Consultants as a project archaeologist where he undertook numerous excavation and monitoring projects, architectural surveys, and occasional pedestrian surveys. In May 2020 Stuart joined G2 Archaeology as a Senior Archaeologist specializing in historic archaeology and architecture. With G2 Stuart undertook an extensive campaign of excavation within the Rochester Mining District, a large architectural survey of parts of the Newlands Project area, and undertook several important architectural surveys at various Nevada mining districts. In 2022 Stuart joined NCE Engineering, adding his broad range of experience and expertise to NCE's small but well established CRM team.
