About Stuart S. Winkler

Dr. Winkler is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He maintains an appointment as Assistant Professor of Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics through the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Winkler grew up in Houston, Texas as the oldest of 4 children. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee the same year that the Houston Oilers relocated. He was homeschooled but was well socialized through his church, his lawncare business, his work as a hospital food service worker and as a trusty benchwarmer for the Nashville Central Christian Warriors basketball team. In college, Dr. Winkler was a University Honors Scholar at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He majored in biology and worked for three years in Dr. Deb Kreiss’ neuroscience lab. He developed a love for the rats and saved two, Lola and Melosa, from being euthanized, adopting them as pets. Throughout college, he worked as an RA on campus and as a server at Tony’s Pasta Shop. During his last year of college, he commissioned in the U.S. Air Force through the Health Professions Scholarship Program. After college, Dr. Winkler began his medical training at Quillen College of Medicine in East Tennessee as part of the Rural Primary Care Track. Realizing his love for women’s health and oncology, Dr. Winkler did his OB/GYN residency at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His experience there and as a Rutledge Fellow at MD Anderson further solidified his call to become an oncologist. For four years following residency, Dr. Winkler was an OB/GYN at Langley Air Force Base Hospital, serving as medical director for 2 years. After fulfilling his initial Air Force obligation, Dr. Winkler moved to the Washington D.C. area to complete a 3-year fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. His research interests focused on uterine sarcoma and racial disparities in uterine cancer. As a fellow, he was accepted to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Gamma Chapter. Dr. Winkler currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and a staff gynecologic oncologist at Brooke Army Medical Center, Joint Base San Antonio. In his free time, he can be found studying for a master's in theology and biblical studies from Wheaton College, spending time with his wife at Vine in the Villiage in Bulverde, coaching his kids' sports teams, watching the Houston Astros or playing guitar.
