Background
About Stuart Winchester
Stuart has almost 30 years' professional experience in the environment industry where his roles have included technical director, technical specialist, business leader, team manager, project manager, and project director. Stuart’s technical experience includes environmental projects across various industries including energy and resources, water, natural resources, industrial, transport, and waste. Stuart has significant experience in domestic and international mining projects including coal, gold, iron ore, mineral sands, opal, uranium and base metals mines, and on-shore gas. Stuart has technical experience across a range of environmental capabilities including environmental approvals, applied environmental geochemistry, mine closure, contaminated land management, catchment management, due diligence auditing, environmental monitoring, environmental regulation, sustainability assurance, waste management and circular economy initiatives, and environmental management. Such a range of experience, when coupled with technical (PhD, MSc, Grad.Dip.App.Sc, BSc), business (MBA) and formal project management (Dip.Proj.Man.) qualifications, enables Stuart to understand the business case for environmental projects, and where they fit into broader strategy. Stuart’s experience includes environmental projects in most states of Australia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, New Zealand, Senegal, The Philippines and Singapore. Stuart is a Fellow of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, and a Member of the International Association of Geochemistry and the Closure Planning Practitioners Association. Stuart's technical differentiator is in environmental geochemistry and industrial waste repurposing using circular economy principles for the purpose of degraded land rehabilitation, including mines, where his degrees in geology (BSc), applied geomorphology (MSc), and geochemistry (PhD), make him exceptionally well-placed to manage the various technical disciplines required in degraded land rehabilitation. This is particularly so in sulfidic mineral waste management for mine closure, Stuart's PhD focus, and his key practice area for around the last 20 years. Stuart is able to link waste streams to repurposing opportunities and gain legal approvals for beneficially repurposing the wastes through Government agencies including the EPA for the purpose of legally permissible degraded land and mine site rehabilitation.
