About Sugam Kumar

As a scientist at the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi, I specialize in experimental atomic physics, with core expertise in ion trap development, quantum computing architectures, and high-precision ion–laser interaction studies. My research spans a wide spectrum, from accelerator design to the development of cryogenic Penning trap systems for investigating relativistic electron impact ionization, zero-point energy (ZPE), and quantum logic operations using trapped electrons. These efforts aim to probe fundamental quantum phenomena under ultra-controlled conditions. Currently, I am leading the development of a scalable quantum computing platform based on a linear array of microfabricated Planar Penning traps. The work emphasizes decoherence suppression, non-destructive readout using the continuous Stern–Gerlach effect, and system operation at millikelvin temperatures and ultra-high vacuum, essential for stable qubit realization. In parallel, I actively contribute to the HILITE experiment in collaboration with GSI Helmholtzzentrum (Germany), exploring strong-field laser–ion interactions, including multi-photon ionization (MPI), tunneling ionization, above-barrier ionization, and high-harmonic generation (HHG) in highly charged ions.
