About Sujoy Subroto

I am a Ph.D. Candidate and Eyes High Scholar in the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary, AB, Canada. I specialize in policy analysis and environmental governance, with over 10 years of experience in field research, classroom teaching, and collaboration with NGOs and rural communities in various climate-conservation-development projects. I hold a master's degree in Rural Development and Natural Resource Management from Sweden (under prestigious Swedish Institute Study Scholarships) and a bachelor's and master's degree in Forestry from Bangladesh. My research intersects the broad spectrum of forest governance and conservation politics, exploring emerging nature-society relations under the carbon/REDD+ regime, rural livelihood transition, and climate justice through a political ecology perspective and a decolonial lens. I have conducted research in diverse settings, ranging from tropical rainforests to the world's largest transboundary mangrove, Sundarbans in India and Bangladesh, as well as anti-racist climate change solutions and land-based Indigenous environmentalism in Canada and beyond. I have also published several peer-reviewed scholarly articles and op-eds on contemporary environmental and human rights issues (in Bengali and English Newspapers) and developed reciprocal relationships and scholarly networks with various Indigenous communities, racialized minorities, and other stakeholders. As a strong advocate for social justice and an activist, I firmly believe research is a powerful tool to meaningfully engage with marginalized communities, amplify their voices, and bring about transformative changes responsibly and collectively, especially in this era of sustainability and climate concerns.
