About Sumitrra Bala

Sumitrra Bala is a BSc Physics graduate from University of Science, Malaysia. She has a solid foundation in the Natural Sciences with a strong focus in Physics (Mechanics, E&M, Electronics Thermodynamics, Optics, Solid State Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and Astronomy) and Advanced Mathematics (Calculus, Linear Algebra, Vector Analysis, Complex Analysis and Differential Equations). With her Data Analytics minor, she has built a solid foundation in Programming (C++, Python and R) and Database Organisation and Design (Oracle APEX SQL). At her first position, she lead the Flight Analytics of the company's large-scale project to accumulate 400 hours of flight time for cargo delivery drones. This was a project sponsored by the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI). She had provided key data insights and proposed analytical strategies to be used by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) in her post-flight report. Flight data is tricky as information is encoded in binary, but being a Pure Science major gave her enough skills and patience to conduct thorough research on how to extract binary information and conduct data wrangling and cleaning in preparation for analysis. When she's not solving a math problem or debugging a code, she's busy solving real world problems. Appointed President of Sekretariat Sukarelawan India USM (SSI USM) for the 20/21 Academic Session, Sumitrra led the shift of volunteerism activities from a physical mode to a virtual mode in the face of the pandemic. Under her leadership, many projects were restructured and new projects were introduced to comply with the dire needs of the community at the time. The Beehive Project designed to advertise SMEs using online media tools and fund capital to startup new businesses as a means of ensuring financial sustainability in the community was just one of the many projects initiated by Sumitrra under Sekretariat Sukarelawan India 20/21. She has a passion for technology in education and envisions a future in which Machine Learning is incorporated as a mainstream Teaching and Learning (T&L) tool to help understand each individual student's academic strengths and weaknesses hence creating a more inclusive learning experience for one and all. Oh! She also has a knack for the organ and guitar and listens to music every second of every day. Tennis is her adrenaline rush and meditation is her sedative.
