About Summer Norgate

A combination of many aspects in my life have lead me to becoming involved in the New Zealand Aquaculture Industry. With recent experience involved with a research programme breeding Greenshell Mussel spat, I have experience in the larval rearing of oysters as well as a Bachelor of Science majoring in Ecology, minoring in Marine Science. I am also due to complete my masters degree in January 2024. Before coming into the industry, I have had a wide range of commercial work experience from growing up sheep and beef farming, to working at one of NZ’s biggest meat processing plants, to creating cardboard boxes with a bit of health and safety and quality assurance experience thrown in amongst that. I value Matauranga Maori and spent a summer working for the Taranaki Regional Council and Taranaki Iwi, working on ways to incorporate matauranga maori into western science methods of monitoring freshwater health. This was a particularly important experience to me, as Maori knowledge and protecting that tikanga is of great value to New Zealand and to the world. This is where my value for preserving matauranga Maori started and what I hope to continue throughout my life.
