About Sumner Ford

My journey with nature began at the age of three when I wandered into the vast sugar maples and ash trees behind my parents' house, only to be found half a mile away by a neighbor. This early adventure set the stage for a lifetime of outdoor exploration and appreciation. Growing up, I honed my independence, leadership, and competence at Pine Island Camp and later as a member of the Outing Club at St. Lawrence University. These experiences instilled in me a profound respect for nature and a deep understanding of our impact on the environment. My awareness of environmental issues started young, as I learned about the disappearance of Elm trees in Vermont, the plight of American Chestnuts, and the threats posed by Emerald Ash Borer and Beech Bark Disease. This concern for my local environment expanded as I realized the global scale of ecological challenges. Today, I am dedicated to fostering a love for nature in the next generation. As the director of Pine Island Camp, I spend my summers nurturing young people’s independence and environmental stewardship. Off-season, I manage the camp’s budget, hire staff, and recruit campers, ensuring the camp’s mission thrives year-round. I am passionate about outdoor activities and strive to connect others to the natural world. When not outside, I immerse myself in literature about nature, continually expanding my knowledge and passion. I thrive in mission-driven organizations that align with my dedication to the outdoors and conservation.
