ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Data collection: Mapping operators use specialized mapping vehicles equipped with sensors such as lidar, cameras, and GPS to collect data on roads, traffic signs, lane markings, and other features that are relevant for autonomous driving. Data processing: After data is collected, mapping operators use sophisticated software tools to process and analyze the data. This involves creating 3D maps that accurately represent the physical environment and can be used by Waymo's self-driving cars to navigate safely. Map updates: Maps are not static and need to be updated as roads change or new features are added. Mapping operators are responsible for identifying changes to the road network, verifying them, and updating the maps accordingly. Quality assurance: Mapping operators need to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the maps they create. They must identify and correct any errors or discrepancies in the map data to ensure the safety and effectiveness of Waymo's autonomous vehicles.
