About Surein Theivakumar

I am a sports medicine physician with a subspecialty in interventional spine and integrative medicine. I am dual board certified in Sports Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. My focus is treating all musculoskeletal pain, sports and non-sport related injuries, and restoring function. Being Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSK) allows me to perform diagnostic ultrasound and minimally invasive interventions in the office. This includes ultrasound guided injections and regenerative medicine procedures, such as platelet rich plasma therapy and percutaneous tenotomy. I am seasoned in treating all sports related injuries with my experiences including former team physician for Saint Joseph’s College, covering the New York City Marathon, and team physician for sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, boxing, and soccer. My expertise in interventional spine allows me to perform lumbar spine and hip fluoroscopic guided procedures for many back and hip related conditions. I am also licensed to practice acupuncture and perform a combination of Eastern and Western styles to treat all musculoskeletal pains. My primary goal is to work together with my patients and provide them with a variety of “tools in my toolkit” to come up with the best personalized plan to treat their pain and restore function. I had the privilege to serve as a resident, chief resident, and fellow at NYU School of Medicine. I was a three-time recipient of the Howard Rusk Award for Academic Excellence and Teaching. As Associate Program Director for NYU School of Medicine PM & R residency program, I am able to shape the medical education of our future physicians. As a Clinical Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, I am passionate about working in academia alongside my colleagues to optimize and improve musculoskeletal care.
