About Susan Bregman

I'm a writer and photographer with a focus on the everyday and overlooked aspects of the built environment, from trains and bridges to neon signs and bowling alleys. I have written three books - New England Neon (2018), New England Candlepin Bowling (2020), and Along Route 1: Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts (2023). Selected photos are available at Besides my love for roadside attractions, I am a lifelong transit enthusiast.(Some would say transit nerd.) Whatever you call me, this passion for transit is why I’ve devoted much of my career to public transportation. I’ve been a researcher, an advocate, a planner, and a communicator. I’ve worked as a public official and a private consultant. I have managed project teams, developed policies, delivered testimony, and run community meetings. But no matter which hat I was wearing at the time, the goal was the same: Support mass transit and encourage others to do the same. I founded Oak Square Resources, LLC, in 2013 to offer expertise in how transportation agencies can use social media to connect with their customers and their communities. I co-edited a book on the topic, published in October 2013. I also edited TheTransitWire.com, a daily blog that covered all aspects of transit technology for 10 years. Before setting up my own firm, I worked at Multisystems (and its successor TranSystems) as a senior associate with a focus on job-access transportation. I previously worked for the Boston Transportation Department as assistant director of policy and planning and at the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center as an operations research analyst.
