About Susan Joyce

Susan is a leading specialist for socially sustainable resource development and is recognized for her expertise in Business & Human Rights and international standards. She co-founded On Common Ground in 1997 to innovate in social issues management; she continues innovating at the leading edge of practice to further social sustainability for all stakeholders and the achievement of meaningful positive outcomes as defined by communities. Susan has contributed to international initiatives that move the bar on social sustainability over 2 decades. She participated extensively in the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD), led the Marlin Mine Human Rights Assessment - one of the first and most public applications of the UNGPs in mining (2008-2010) and served on the Expert Panel that developed the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (2019-2020), an initiative of UNEP, PRI and ICMM. With 30 years experience working directly in social aspects of the natural resource development and energy, Susan is now focused on integrated decision-making in the mining industry, in particular in support of safer tailings management. She brings her specialties to bear, including human rights due diligence, the strategic assessment of relations between communities and project development activities, and a Professional Certificate in Tailings Management, to support clients to transition from compliance to leadership and innovation in the evolving practice of tailings management and implementation of GISTM. Susan serves as a member of an ITRB supporting broad GISTM assurance.
