About Susan Sanchez

After starting and managing two Laboratory Animal Diagnostic Laboratories for a decade, one in an academic setting at the Royal Veterinary College in London and another in the private sector, Surrey Diagnostics. Dr. Sanchez moved to the US and joined the University of Georgia as an assistant professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Section Head of Microbiology at the state veterinary diagnostic laboratory. During her time at the University of Georgia, Dr. Sanchez raised through the ranks to a full professor status and established a new section in Molecular Diagnostics – which currently includes NGS technology and personalized medicine. She also raised several million dollars in research funds from federal sources and obtained the first and only NIH training grant at the College of Veterinary Medicine; currently, this grant is in its 16th year. She has published over 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts, trained graduate, and undergraduate students in research, and received multiple awards during her academic career. She is a strong advocate for women in science and actively mentors postdocs and junior faculty members. Dr. Sanchez did run the summer research training for veterinary students for ten years and started the One Health Initiative at UGA based in the Biomedical and Translational Sciences Institute where she is Assistant Director. She created a microbiology residency program in Clinical Microbiology and has guided several students to become board certified in Clinical Veterinary Microbiology. Dr. Sanchez is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Biology; she currently serves as a member of the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils. Experienced Professor Of Biology with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Skilled in Veterinary Medicine, Molecular Biology, Virology, Ecology, and Immunology.
