Trauma to Triumph: Waymaker in the Darkness Once upon a time, in a world where challenges and opportunities intertwined, there emerged a dedicated therapist with a heart full of empathy and a mind brimming with innovation. It was dark and stormy. Thunder clattered, lightning flashed, rain poured. The lights went out. Woman huddled in the corner with Boy. Boy was completely nonverbal. As the storm calmed, Boy looked to Woman, placing his hand upon her cheek. His first audible word… “drizzle.” It’s me – I am Woman. That day, my eyes and heart forever opened to the power of connection, to all that can be spoken in the unspoken. My journey began with special needs individuals and those on the Autism Spectrum. Inspired by my work with Boy and fired up to discover more, this fueled my passion and led me to a Master’s Degree in Social Work and a career working with individuals facing complex and developmental trauma. But my story has evolved! I embraced the micro work with a full heart, yet still seeking and wanting more. Mezzo-macro opportunities came calling, and I found myself enriched within grant writing, business proposals, program development, evaluation, and re-design. Filling not just my heart, but also my mind with grit and prospect. Since 2011, I’ve been intertwined in direct practice, training development/public speaking, and program leadership within child welfare and mental health for both large and small for-profit and non-profit agencies. Boy fueled my heart with a dedication to a career in serving vulnerable populations in so many ways, navigating each storm to reach the calm of a “drizzle.”
