About Susan Shields
I specialize in Arts Education (Visual, Musical, and Dance) and Commissioned Arts Problem-Solving (Scientific and Technical Illustrations, Portrait, Figurative and Mural Commissions). In all I do, I strive to integrate whatever knowledge I have acquired- often merging unlikely subjects and ideas- in order to best fulfill specific commissions and educational contracts. As visual arts educator, I have worked with all ages and levels of experience. My own area of expertise involves the live human form; extensive figurative and anatomical studies done in college and my own past dance training inform my life drawing curricula. In turn, my studio figurative work enhances my scientific illustrations- be they medical, botanical or zoological. Finally, as a writer, home-school instructor and school arts resident, I use the written word to develop, fortify and integrate the learning experience, encouraging appreciation and more powerful communication-through and about art.
