Suzanne Liff’s professional life is inspired by the profound impact emotions on learning, respect for the abilities of every student, and passion for the ongoing professional growth of educators. A full professor in the Department of Reading and Basic Education at Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York, Suzanne holds advanced degrees in Special Education and in Educational Administration and Supervision. At regional and national professional conferences she addresses best practices in higher education, program design to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning across disciplines, and groundbreaking work on the integration of social and emotional intellectual competencies for inspirational teaching and student success. Suzanne authored the developmental textbook series, Experience Reading (2012), and Contexts: Reading in the Disciplines,(2016) for McGraw-Hill. She published journal articles, including,"Social and Emotional Intelligence: Applications for Developmental Education," in the Journal of Developmental Education, and "Teaching Readers to Be THIEVES," for the International Reading Association. She has been filmed for the Reading is Fundamental Series, “Reading to Learn” on PBS. Suzanne recently crafted a manuscript identifying SEI competencies and their impact upon personal and scholarly growth in college. Professor Liff created and coordinates, the NCC IDEAS Initiative (Integrated Disciplinary Instruction for Academic Scholarship) to infuse the practice of basic academic skills within all academic disciplines of college study. She continues to lead the development of the CASTLE, Center of Academic Scholarship for Teaching and Learning Excellence, on the NCC campus. An honorary life member of SEPTA, Suzanne received the 2003 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for outstanding scholarly and professional accomplishment and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2007.
