About Suzanne Mattison

I vividly remember sitting in my first college-level writing class. I was a recent "beauty school dropout," and I was fascinated as my instructor changed many students' attitudes about writing. Mostly interested in her effective teaching methods, I don't remember any of the assignments or any grades I earned, but I do remember how she made me feel capable and prepared. Despite not being a naturally gifted writer, I excelled academically, graduating at the top of my class two decades ago. For over a decade, I've been dedicated to empowering students, guiding them to hone their writing skills and foster self-belief. Since 2006, I've been deeply involved in education, particularly at Mississippi State University, where I initially served as a graduate assistant in the Dean's Office of Arts & Sciences. Throughout my tenure, I've taught various writing courses, including composition, literature, and professional writing tailored to agriculture, natural resources, and related fields. Known for my approachability and supportiveness, I've cultivated lasting connections with students and colleagues alike. Beyond writing instruction, I strive to offer encouragement and a nurturing environment as students face life's challenges. Proficient in both traditional and online instruction, I thrive on student interaction. I've developed innovative teaching methods, such as a comprehensive revision and drafting process, empowering students to refine their writing independently. I eagerly anticipate continuing to inspire and support students for many years to come. I advocate for embracing the writing process, emphasizing each individual's inherent worth and contribution to the world of ideas.
