About Suzie Byers

Suzie brings 28 years of experience to her work at the International Institute in Spain. After graduating from Wesleyan University with degrees in Economics and Spanish, she worked in Emerging Markets at JP Morgan in New York, London, and Tokyo. On Wall Street, Suzie realized that using Spanish was the most inspiring part of her job, so she pivoted her career to education. Over the next 17 years, Suzie taught Spanish to every age group from toddlers to teens, primarily at Lexington Montessori near Boston. From 2010 to 2011, she taught English in Chile at La Escuela Montessori de Valparaíso. After earning her Master of Education in Human Development and Psychology at Harvard University in 2016, Suzie taught graduate students in the leadership program at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Her four years of teaching adults led her to Madrid Montessori, where she supported the growth and development of members of the community as Head of School for two years until the International Institute in Spain appointed her Director of English. Founded in 1892, the Institute’s mission promotes language and cultural exchange between Spain and the United States, with a particular emphasis on educational equality for girls and women. During her Semester in Spain at the Instituto Internacional in 1993, Suzie said she would return someday. She finally fulfilled that promise 29 years later in a role that allows her to contribute to the vision of bringing innovation and growth to this beloved institution.
