About Swatantra Kumar

My research is focused on understanding host-viral interactions using suitable cell based models and the development of effective preventive strategies against them. I have developed therapeutics for encephalitis causing viruses to reduce microglial activation and enhance neuronal survival. One of my highly cited works is related to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have analyzed the spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 during early 2020, revealing important structural and antigenic differences compared to SARS-CoV, which has uncovered the routes for various COVID-19 vaccines development. I have been involved in the characterization of the highly transmissible Omicron variant, identifying crucial spike mutations associated with vaccine breakthrough cases. Currently, I am looking for a post doctoral position where I can decipher tissue specific immunological memory responses against emerging viral infections and to design effective vaccine formulations containing novel adjuvants to generate long-lasting antigen-specific immune responses in the tissue wherein viruses actively replicate or persist. This will help to address critical gaps in our understanding of host-viral interactions and advance vaccine design strategies to control and prevent the spread of emerging viral pathogens.
