About Sylvanus Barnabas

I am a legal scholar and researcher with a strong focus on climate change law, environmental governance, human rights and the socio-legal dimensions of development in Nigeria and the Global South. My academic journey has been shaped by a deep engagement with critical legal theories, particularly those of John Griffiths, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and Frantz Fanon, whose insights inform my approach to legal pluralism, decolonisation, and transformative justice. Currently developing scholarly works on climate justice, indigenous land rights, electricity governance, and the legal profession in Nigeria, I bring a critical and policy-relevant perspective to law reform and institutional development. My forthcoming signature book seeks to provoke national reflection on the role of law in society and the imperative for a more culturally grounded and socially responsive legal system. I am particularly passionate about aligning legal education and institutional frameworks with the pressing demands of climate change, consumer protection, and environmental sustainability. Through rigorous research and collaborative publications, I aim to contribute meaningfully to legal scholarship, advocacy, and policy transformation both within Nigeria and across the African continent.
