About Sylvia Hoffmann

I am a singer, but also a linguist and educator, and a photographer. In terms of music, my biggest passion is Brazil; especially bossa nova and traditional samba (samba de raiz). My main project is the Polka Nova duo with a 7-string Brazilian guitarist, Rafael Valim.(@PolkaNovaLondon). However, I enjoy more vibrant carnival grooves too; I have performed with samba schools and percussion groups (Paraíso, London School of Samba, Rhythms of the City) in Guanabara and other venues, and at many UK festivals and carnival parades, including the Notting Hill Carnival, Luton Carnival, Nottingham and Liverpool carnivals. My influences? The amazing Ella Fitzgerald, the ever-inspiring duo of Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes; Elis Regina, Rosa Passos, Mônica Salmaso, Liane Carroll. And the list goes on. I am available for a variety of musical projects, as a lead singer or to do backing vocals. I have lent my voice on a number of music projects in London, including on the recording of Femi Temowo's The Storyteller's Psalm and David Willet's album Tem (http://temalbum.blogspot.co.uk/) For my photography, please visit:
