While these interests might seem at odds with my advocacy for sustainability, I believe we are all like onions*.The construction industry is also layered and complex. With buildings accounting for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, the construction industry faces a significant challenge. As our global population grows, so does the need for new buildings. However, this growth must be balanced with sustainability. At the heart of construction are the people. However, one of the greatest challenges I encounter in the construction industry is reluctance to change, to doing things differently. Despite this, the construction sector has a crucial role in climate change mitigation, electrifying sites and buildings, adopting renewable energies, reducing waste, improving operational efficiencies, and enhancing social well-being and inclusion. I have a key role in connecting sustainable construction operations with our project teams and delivery partners on sites. I believe in bringing everyone along for the journey, understanding the why, and appealing to the heart of why we have a role to play in taking positive global action. I approach advancing game-changers in the construction machinery industry and promote the ways in which we can operate our construction sites towards a net-zero future. I like to imagine transforming our construction sites, one by one, free of emissions and pollution. Sustainability in construction taps into my passions for creativity, innovation, problem-solving and continuous learning.
