About Sylvie Arques

I had the privilege of growing up in Africa, the French West Indies, and the most remote islands of French Polynesia and New Caledonia where my father, a medical doctor, dedicated his life to serving local communities. Alongside his medical profession, my dad was also a skilled private pilot, and I followed in his footsteps, becoming a passionate aviator myself. I hold both a Commercial Pilot certificate and a Flight Instructor certificate. Inspired by my dad's expertise and our shared enthusiasm for aviation, we embarked on incredible adventures together. These extraordinary experiences immersed me in diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes, shaping my perspective and fostering a deep appreciation for the world's natural beauty. My academic journey has molded me into an environmental geographer with a profound interest in various aspects of our planet's dynamics. Inspired by my upbringing, my research focuses on geo-ecology, environmental changes driven by both human activities and climate, and the critical issue of climate resiliency. Over the past five years, I have had the privilege of working at the Northwest Indian College. There I have dedicated my efforts to teaching GIS & Remote Sensing applications, and STEM subjects, to indigenous communities in collaboration with NASA and USDA. Through this partnership, we explored cutting-edge applications of GIS and Remote Sensing technologies, studying environmental changes and their impacts on indigenous lands and communities. Working alongside indigenous communities, I witnessed the power of education rooted in place-based teachings, where the land and the people are intricately interconnected. We fostered a holistic understanding of the environment and empowered indigenous communities to actively participate in the stewardship of their ancestral lands. I am committed to leveraging geospatial technology to help build stronger, more resilient communities. I am actively seeking opportunities to collaborate with passionate professionals and organizations in the private sector to drive positive change and advance our collective goals.
