My working life has been based in and around timber. I have a broad understanding of the built environment and a wide network of knowledgeable professionals who are keen to impart valuable knowledge so that together we can build better and deep retrofit more. Timber Development UK - a merger of TRADA and the Timber Trade Federation - proactively seeks to educate and to provide information that encourages an understanding of timber from the forest, through to post occupancy evaluation - so that timber can be used wisely and well. Via engagement we link industry members, academia and the professionals that design, specify, engineer, craft or construct with timber and timber products - so that we can work collaboratively to build a better timber future. What can be better than a Woodland planted with a site specific mix of tree species, managed for both amenity and timber products, increasing carbon storage, cleaning our air, mitigating water run-off, encouraging a biodiverse habitat. Harvested at an appropriate age, milled for both core and co-products, the timber dried to the correct EMC and specified knowledgeably. Used wisely by craftsmen to create buildings, housing, furniture, structures, art. Buildings and homes that are energy efficient, healthy, carbon storing, sustainable, restorative and regenerative which will be loved - and last a lifetime or longer? Buildings are Hybrid. Timber used wisely and appropriately in new builds or retrofits can bring multiple benefits, some of which have yet to be scientifically understood. Let's not just strive for innovation but build incrementally on the knowledge we do have - and share that knowledge altruistically!
