About Tai Munro

I can't change the assessments… or can I? Some students will fail the course… or will they? You can’t change the world… are you sure? There are many can't's, shouldn't's, won't's, and not a chances when it comes to both sustainability and education. But, as I'm sure my friends and family will attest, the moment you tell me something can't or won't work, I want to find a way to make it happen. Sustainability is fundamental to our future but not in a narrow manage our environmental resources way. Sustainability, that integrates social justice, cultural vitality, economic integrity, and a flourishing environment, is achievable. Indeed, the elders of many Indigenous cultures can speak to living with the land in ways that help the well-being of people, of relationships, and of the planet. Education, to me, requires a similar integrated view. A learner is not a brain that comes to class for me to fill. They are people, collectively and individually, who have the potential to strive and fail, to grow and learn, to contribute and converse. Sustainability education, the way I look at it, is a place for learners to explore different ways of looking at problems, challenges, and the world. To develop a vision of what could be and then develop a strategy of how we get from here to there. It isn't about talking about what we'll lose but what we can gain by adopting a systems approach and by respecting and learning from each and every being we might interact with. Teaching sustainability is my strategy for how I can help get the world from here to there.
