About Tamara McCants

Tamara McCants, PharmD, is an impassioned advocate for equitable care and dedicated to increasing the capacity of pharmacists to be major contributors in the achievement of favorable health outcomes in underserved communities. Raised in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. McCants received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Florida A&M University. Upon graduation she completed a Post Graduate Year 1 in community pharmacy with Grubbs Care Pharmacy and Howard University in Washington, DC. In 2002, she co-founded CMS Health Initiatives, a non-profit organization utilizing pharmacists to address health disparities in HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and immunizations. Currently a medical science liasion with Abbott Diabetes Care, she has over 20 years of experience in a variety of pharmacy practice settings; including managed care, ambulatory care, operations/management and academia. Dr. McCants is the current President of the National Pharmaceutical Association, a national pharmacy organization dedicated to the advancement of black and other underrepresented pharmacy personnel. In 2008, she received the Bowl of Hygeia Award, one of the highest honors in the profession. She is the immediate past Chair of the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy. She also serves on the boards of Community Education Group (President) and Homes for Hope. She is an active member of the FAMU Alumni Association and a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Rho Mu Omega Chapter.
