Background
About Tamas Jilling
I embarked on my academic research journey at the young age of 19 when I joined Dr. Miklós Kellermayer's research group during my second year of medical school in Hungary. Over the next 4-5 years, I had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. Kellermayer, which solidified my passion for academic research as a lifelong career. My commitment to advancing knowledge in the field led me to pursue postgraduate training in cell and molecular techniques in Dr. Kevin Kirk's laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Afterward, I continued to cultivate my expertise as a faculty member at Northwestern University, where I was an integral part of a perinatal research group at NorthShore University HealthSystem. There, I had the honor of serving as the inaugural Ellrodt-Schweighauser Family Chair of Perinatal Medicine. In 2012, I returned to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I became a faculty member in the Division of Neonatology. Currently, my scientific endeavors revolve around exploring the intricate physiology and pathophysiology of pregnancy and early neonatal life—i.e, the perinatal continuum. A particular area of keen interest is developmental perinatal environmental toxicology. My motivation stems from the excitement of uncovering novel insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms of diseases and discovering innovative therapeutic approaches that have the potential to save lives. My specialties encompass designing hypothesis-driven research protocols, navigating grant applications and reviews, manuscript preparation and review, and providing comprehensive training to undergraduate, graduate, medical students, and clinical fellows. I am dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and contributing to the betterment of healthcare through cutting-edge research.
