Background
About Tane Whitehead
Kia ora koutou, Ko Taranaki tōku Maunga Ko Matanehunehu tōku Awa Ko Kurahaupo tōku Waka Ko Tarawainuku is our Marae Ko Te Ati Awa me Taranak ōku Iwi Ko Nga Mahanga is our Hapu Ko Tane Allen Whitehead ahau My name is Tane Whitehead, and I have the privilege of being the Current Grants Coordinator at Sport Otago. Our team at Sport Otago is dedicated to harnessing the power of physical activity for community development, supported by my background in Sports and Exercise Science (and Economics) from the University of Otago. My role as Grants Coordinator focuses on coordinating four major funds that enable sports, active recreation, and play projects to flourish, enhancing the well-being of our youth. This leverages my research skills and a profound understanding of communication dynamics, ensuring our objectives resonate with stakeholders and funding bodies. Previous roles have had a higher demand on being personable, where the various teams I had the privilege of working alongside championed the physical and social development of children through innovative play-based activities. Our success rested on a foundation of problem-solving and adaptability, qualities that I now bring to my current role. My commitment to giving back is unwavering, as I continually strive to create inclusive environments that foster growth and learning for all participants. In my spare time I am passionate about rugby league. Starting at 11 years old, playing for Western Suburbs Tigers (Taranaki), I went through to Mid Central Vipers to play at a national level here in New Zealand. I have now been fortunate to coach in the girls and womens space, my inspiration being my mum who worked tirelessly and supported me through my journey. Additionally, it allows me to be in tune with the struggles my 14 year old sister faces, as I have missed a lot of her childhood to seek further education. Having coached Otago Rugby League U18 girls, right through to Auckland Niue U17s girls (in the space of two years), I seek guidance and opportunity as I try to find the best of my work and coaching lives. Most importantly, I put my hauora (Wellbeing) first, to ensure I can keep supporting the communities I am lucky enough to be supported by.
