Background
About Tanmay Sonawane
I am a dual major in Data Science and Mathematics with concentration in Applied Statistics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, maintaining a 3.99 GPA and a six-time recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for consistent academic excellence. Driven by curiosity and clarity, my core mission is to extract actionable insights from complex data. In a world overflowing with information, I aim to make data understandable and useful, primarily through intuitive visualizations and machine learning tools. Whether it’s building predictive models or simple exploratory graphs, I want my work to help others make better decisions. I have built hands-on experience through academic projects like a salary prediction model using machine learning models like XGBoost and LightGBM, as well as creating SQL database systems. I'm currently a Peer-Assisted Learning Leader for mathematics, supporting students in calculus and finite mathematics. As President of the UMassD Badminton Club, I’ve improved my leadership and operations skills. Most recently, I lead the planning and execution of the club’s largest tournament to date, hosting over 60 attendees across a two-day event. I led everything from securing $2,050 in funding, purchasing equipment and trophies, managing scorekeeping, organizing match schedules, and coordinating with the Athletics Department to reserve official space and gain university recognition. We had the honor of having the University's Vice Chancellor personally present the trophies to the winners at the closing ceremony. The event ran smoothly thanks to thoughtful preparation, clear communication with my team, and a shared commitment to excellence. I was part of the development team of a Smart Medication Tracker App, which earned 2nd place at the 2025 UMassD Computer Science Design Competition. This React Native + Node.js mobile app helps elderly patients manage medications through LLM-powered AI guidance, calendar scheduling, and real-time alerts. I am currently seeking internship opportunities in data analytics or applied data science, where I can contribute my technical background, leadership experience, and deep interest in solving real-world problems with data.
